Maryland Football '78 Team Reunion

September 20, 2008

I hope some of the guys will send me a story to post on this page - phil@phillivingston.com

Sarah and I at the Gosset team house in Byrd Stadium

With Kyle Lorton, center, and Jim Ulam, quick tackle.

Jim Ulam. Joe Muffler, Steve Koziol, Mike Simon, Chris Ward, me and Keith Calta

Story from Mike - We played Clemson in Death Valley and our line coach convinced Coach Claiborne to run the Z screen. They read it all the way and the DB picked it off and ran 90 yards for a TD. Mike got his picture in the Diamondback school paper, chasing the guy down the sideline. When he started chasing him, he was only about 10 yards back, that gap widened to about 35 yards.

Muffler, Koziol, Glen Chamberlain, Ulam, Mike Yeats, Pete Marchito and me.

Mike Yeats was an Offensive guard and the strongest guy on the team. He benched 450 by the school records. He told me he got 475 a few weeks before the testing, but he peaked a little early. They would test us the same day we ran 16 40 yrd dashes and did max dips and chins.

Story from Joe - In the Sun Bowl against Texas, the wind was blowing severely, around 40MPH. We won the toss and our coach elected to receive the ball. Texas took the wind at their back. On the first series we failed to make a first down and when we punted into the wind the ball blew back and never crossed the line of scrimmage. They got the ball at our 25 and scored immediately. Late that day I met longtime Terp fan jack Heise and he repeated the same story about the game.

Joe was Academic All American and he was presented at halftime of the Sun Bowl with all the other winners of the award. He was in game uniform, they in suits and ties!

Neil Olkewicz played middle linebacker - lead the team in tackles and went on to have a great 11 year career with the Redskins. I think he broke the Redskins career tackles record.

Dean Richards, Z receiver, Joe and Neil.

Bob Milkovitch, Chris, Jim, Joe and Neil

Keith Calta and his gang. Keith was a great outside linebacker in our wide-tackle six defense. He was also the hero of the boys on many fronts!

Ted Klaube in the Hawaiin shirt on the right. Ted played defensive guard (like an inside tackle today). He was fast, tough and impossible to block. Ted threw a great tailgate party before the game!

Chris and Joe - one of the numerous married couples on the team. They were inseperable and still are.
